In memory of Matias Baker, 1977–2026

Created by Eduardo Rincón | 05/03/2026 |   News

The Earth has recently lost one of the people who loved it most and understood it best. Matias (Matthew Todd) Baker died on 23 April 2026, after a long battle with cancer at the age of 48.

With heavy hearts and with immense gratitude, we wish to pay tribute to Matias Baker, a devoted collaborator, innovator, and advisor in the Biodynamic Farming community. Matias was a teacher, an alchemist, an artist with a steadfast and profound vision for healing the Earth through biodynamic farming. He connected with people from many communities who cared for the land, continuously pioneering ways to bring creative and luminous transformation of the natural world.  Matias generously shared this passion with many, and those who knew him will remember his remarkable creative spirit, his inquiring mind and his desire for helping people live in greater harmony with the Earth.

Matias brought wisdom, attentiveness, and artistry to the Biodynamic Prep making, and as a trainer he was disciplined and demanding. In the deepest sense of the word, he was a brother of Biodynamics in the Americas. From his big heart, hands, voice and insightful guidance, many new members of the farming community emerged and now work in countries all across the Americas. Matias taught how to interpret and live by cosmic rhythms, to respect forces beyond the visible and to understand that the Earth is a living being deserving of reverence and a sacred connection. More than lectures, his training sessions were deep encounters and those who arrived seeking techniques discovered instead a philosophy and an ethic offering a different way of navigating the world. Matias had the gift of making people feel that cultivating the land was a sacred act and that every biodynamic preparation, every sowing in harmony with the cosmos and every well-made compost was a form of communication with something greater than ourselves. Biodynamic practitioners in many parts of the Americas carry with them the seeds and gifts that he lovingly imparted through his heart and wisdom.

Many mourn his passing and many carry a part of him in their daily work on the farms, producing food that nourishes the body, soul and community. Matias memory will live on in the people he touched and the land he cherished so deeply. His greatest harvest is the beauty, wisdom and heart culture he cultivated.

Dear Matias, thank you for your time, dedication and boundless love. Thank you for teaching us that agriculture is a sacred partnership, not a struggle. That the earth is not a resource, but a living being. That biodynamic farmers do not work on the land, but with it. May you rest in peace on the earth and soar to new heights in the spirit world.
