Rekola Farm in Finland lies in a gentle landscape of forests and lakes. Soft warm light floods the diversity in the vegetable garden. Besides all the lakes, the type of agriculture here is influenced by the special climate of short hot summers alternating with long cold winters. So work on the farm is also marked by a combination of very busy periods in summer followed by quiet and relaxation in the winter months.

The family has been working this land since 1619 and has been able to develop a long tradition with the place and its environment. After Kalervo Rekola took over the farm, it was converted to organic methods in 1973. He then came across biodynamic agriculture thanks to books from the local library. In 1988 he made the courageous move into biodynamics, as the first farm in Finland to do so.

Nowadays the farm supports around 30 cattle, and Joona Rekola grows cereals and strawberries. Since 2008 the existing Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has been developed and expanded by Henri and Maria Murto. A wide range of more than 30-40 types of vegetables and herbs are lovingly grown on the 2-hectare garden.

The vegetables, meat and also seedlings are successfully grown and sold via the CSA at a local farmers' market and to restaurants around Tampere by the 4-5 co-workers on the farm.

One of the principal tenets of the farm is to create a farm organism. The main aim is to develop the existing land to become as diverse as possible, instead of using larger areas for increased yields. Henri Murto believes that, “We should really see the farms as individuals. As one person sees another person. Because every location is different. Every location has a different infrastructure. Different abilities to produce food.”

He is certain that biodynamic agriculture links the social aspect and the environment, thus helping to overcome global challenges.
