Farmers are under pressure: climate change with uncertain harvests, bureaucracy with time-consuming administration and a precarious financial…
There is a growing desire to find ways which expand the purely material approach to the world. The spiritual orientation of biodynamic agriculture arouses the interest of increasing numbers of people. At a first glance there seems to be little in common between a quest for the spiritual dimension and practical agriculture. However, when we are dealing with the real experience of the spiritual in the world, this always requires the whole human being. The conference will show how integrating the spiritual aspect is helpful in understanding our current situation and how it can assist us in our practical work. This spiritual approach can be particularly beneficial for the major challenges of our time. For instance, in understanding and getting to grips with the environmental changes (climate crises, loss of biodiversity, etc.), for the encounter with the virtual and digital world, and also for the difficulties in working together in the social setting.
Biodynamic agriculture has developed into a global movement, bringing it into contact with different spiritual movements. The Agricultural Conference 2020 offers an opportunity to become receptive to others and develop a mutual understanding. Inspiring impulses and diverse spiritual exercise paths help us in a very practical way to act independently and responsibly in agriculture.
The presentations will deal with different facets of a modern approach to spirituality in agriculture. The 3-day workshops offer the opportunity to discover new approaches and exercise paths and to deepen our knowledge of current topics. The forums provide an opportunity to discuss professional issues. Music, artistic workshops, guided tours in and around the Goetheanum and an exhibition all help to bring the spiritual aspect alive.
We invite all friends of the biodynamic movement to join us in "Finding the Spirit in Agriculture" and creating a special conference together!
The conference is open to all.
The programme includes presentations, practical workshops, themed sessions, an open space, artistic courses, exhibitions, guided tours and performances with plenty opportunities for networking and sharing ideas.

Welcome "Rudolf Steiner – 100 years ahead of the science of his time"
André Leu (English)
The biodynamic movement was the first of the formal organic agricultural movements. It has met with criticism from mainstream science and agriculture that calls it ‘muck and magic’ pseudoscience. However while mainstream agriculture has lost hundreds of millions of farmers in the last century and still continues to lose millions farmers to farm failures - an ongoing farming catastrophe - the number of biodynamic farms continues to grow, along with consumer demand for biodynamic products, showing that it is an evidence based, resilient, agricultural system. This presentation will explore how Rudolf Steiner’s lectures in the Agriculture Course in 1924 described a dynamic energy based cosmology that is now being validated by the cutting edges of the latest 21st century science. Steiner’s Anthroposophical assertion that humans can learn to use their minds to develop a higher consciousness to perceive, understand and influence the spiritual and ‘unseen’ realms of the universe is backed by evidence based science. Most importantly, because he knew that the agriculture lectures were amongst his last lectures before the end of his life, Steiner clearly stated that these lectures were the starting point for a truly holistic and evolving agriculture, not an end point, and he wanted us to use our minds combined with evidence based practices to continuously improve and expand agricultural systems.
Lecture "How can I find what is significant?"
Ute Kirchgaesser (German)

Lecutre "How biodynamics changed my life"
Nasari Chavhan (English)
Lecture "Farm individuality – new spiritual quality of time and work"
Henri Murto (English)
Henri Murto will describe through own experiences and studies how understanding the biodynamic farm individuality concept can be a possibility of transforming the old wisdom of time and work, into a modern, active and practical spiritual impulse. As our world becomes even more mobile and materialistic, our relationship towards natural cycles and rhythms must become more conscious. Experiencing the biodynamic farm individuality through daily work and landscape perception can bring new understanding of the communal task we share as a humankind: How young people can connect to the living natural processes in our materialistic time? How we develop new and healthy rhythms between the old and young generations?

Keynote speech "The sun and its significance for the being of the earth"
Anna Cecilia Grünn (German)
In periods of climate change the earth comes under more and more pressure. We humans experience the sun's heat as the cause of increasing droughts and heat waves. But for the being of the earth the sun is an important source of energy and a point of orientation, providing it with stability. This lecture aims to examine the relationship between the sun and the earth from a new point of view.

Eurythmy Performance «Leuchtfäden»
Goetheanum-Eurythmy-Ensemble
The new programme from the Goetheanum Eurythmy Ensemble explores the subject of change, the in-between and transition from various angles. In honour of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth, the music of this programme is dedicated to one of Beethoven's late quartets, Opus 132. With its central slow movement entitled "Holy song of thanksgiving of a convalescent to the Deity, in the Lydian mode", this work is a composition which follows the theme of transition and development very expressively and in this programme is brought into a dialogue with excerpts from "Das Wasser unserer Träume" (the water of our dreams) by Marica Bodrožic. Exploring the theme of transformation and metamorphosis, the vivid dramatic scenes from "El cántaro roto" by Octavio Paz are interwoven in a further dialogue of contrasts with pieces from "Je sens un deuxième coeur" by Kaija Saariaho. Goetheanum Eurythmy Ensemble.

Life sketches
Spiritualities in traditional Andean and Amazonian agriculture
Patricia Roth (Spanish)
The presentation will be based on a reflection on the cultural differences and similarities of agriculture practiced by Andean and Amazonian native peoples. The Andeans see Earth as a living mother, who interacts with the cosmos, especially the stars, the moon and the sun, their agriculture being based on the lunar calendar cycles with respect for the rest times after (re) production. The animals are treated as part of the family for their great help in providing wool, milk, meat, fertilizer and sacred rituals. Agriculture and animal husbandry in the Andes are fundamental to human survival, given the predominantly arid and cold climate, and the altitude of the mountain range. It is essential to store food (maize, potatoes, meat and fish) and wood to maintain body and the houses. While Amazonian peoples live in great abundance of natural biodiversity, there is no need to do many crops in order to obtain the food they necessary to live, nor to store food for the future. Traditionally the Amazonian Indians are carnivores, needing hunting and fishing skills, so they grow only small plantations, predominantly native tubers, and eventhough always have a rich table with abundant garnishes and native fruits. In all indigenous cultures spirituality is very present, especially in the sense of thanking and asking permission from spiritual entities and their gods to perform agricultural activities and wildlife management, performing sacred rituals and ceremonies with songs, dances and power plants, for hunting, planting and harvesting as well as for culinary preparations. Just as Andean peoples are closely connected with water and the stars, so Amazonian Indians are very much related to plants and animals, as well as mythological beings from the forest and water in the cultivation of Mother Earth.
Universal Spirituality
Rachel Pomeroy (English)
Colonisation of India and New Zealand, in each case, virtually destroyed a complete, intact indigenous knowledge system. A knowledge system which determined their practical life, from cultivating food, collecting healing plants, to navigating the mighty Pacific Ocean. My experience of biodynamic practice in both countries has helped me see a universal world spirituality, existing in differing contexts of location, culture and religion.
Friday, 7. February, 8.00 p.m.
Lecture "Heaven on earth – the sensory-supersensory constitution of our reality"
Hans-Christian Zehnter (German)
Reality is the meeting of sense perceptions and thinking in individual human beings – and not a given real object in itself. Reality in itself has a sensible and supersensible nature. This brings consequences for the view of our earthly reality, and for our understanding and how we treat the living earthly world.

Lecture "Biodynamics and its partners: Building bridges in troubled times"
Dan McKanan (English)
The biodynamic movement is one of the most vital organisms within the social ecology of organic agriculture and environmental activism. For nearly a century, biodynamic farmers have partnered with practitioners of organics, permaculture, regenerative agriculture, and other farming techniques. And people following Christian, Buddhist, pagan, New Age, Jewish, Hindu, and Muslim spiritual paths have found rich meaning in the biodynamic practices. Yet other people, equally committed to a spiritual practice, wonder whether biodynamics, with its deep European roots, can fully connect to the struggles of indigenous, African diasporic, and postcolonial communities, all of whose connection to the land has been disrupted by European imperialism. At least in North America, many people (including some who are themselves of European heritage) choose not to engage with biodynamics because they assume it either disregards the spiritual contributions of non-European cultures or appropriates those contributions without acknowledgments. Without making judgments about the truth or fairness of these perceptions, this presentation will reflect on what biodynamics can learn from them, and what new strategies might open new possibilities for mutual learning among all who are committed to a diverse, sustainable, and spiritually connected world.

Anna Cecilia Grünn & Ursula Marhenke & Selina Dostie (Deutsch/Français) (i)

8 Different spiritualities and biodynamic agriculture / Espiritualidades diferentes y agricultura biodinámica
Marcela Vega Toy & Sundeep Kamath & Rachel Pomeroy (English/Español) (s)
The Maori creation mythology, the sadness of the separation of heaven and earth, and our possibility, through practice of biodynamics, to turn sorrow to joy. The temple of the heavens reflected in the Wharenui, the meeting house, and, further, in the temple of our own body. In the context of these histories, experience “As above, so below”, macrocosm and microcosm and the role of the BD preps in facilitating the ordering forces of the Cosmos to order the life in our farm and garden. Maori astronomy and star-lore will help us understand and remember the ascending and descending periods of the moon and which farming activities to do in each period. The summer and winter homes of the Sun help us know the seasons of the year, and the ascending and descending moon, and how they are used in timing agricultural practices. The Maori moon calendar, based on moon phases and tides and what can we learn from it. Jessica Hutchings’ characterisation of the six principles of traditional Maori food growing/collecting, and how she incorporated biodynamics into her own garden management.
From India, the Navagraha, the nine planets, their plants, their arrangement in the temple in relation to the setting and rising horizons, dying and becoming. Shiva bringing the world into creation helps elucidate the role of planetary processes and BD preps in unfolding life. The circle of 27 Nakshstra star groups, or 12 Rasi (Zodiac constellations), as natural divisions of the 360 degree circuit of sun, moon and planets through the stars. Sacred grove plantings of the 27 Nakshatra trees. The sacred cow, traditional fertility building recipes and practice, and how biodynamics is incorporated in practice.

João Felipe Ginefra Toni (English/Español) (s)
In this workshop, the Goethean method of plant morphology will be introduced and the observation of flower metamorphosis within monocotyledonous plants will be practiced in order to develop the breeder's perspective.
10 Eating for the body, soul, spirit. The challenges of nourishment in the 21st century / Cibo per il corpo – cibo per l’anima – cibo per lo spirito. Le sfide dell’alimentazione nel 21 ° secolo
Fabio Montelatici & Petra Rizzardo (English/Italiano) (s)
We live in a time of challenges, and eating makes no exception. How can eating be healty today? How can healty food be available to everyone? And what about our soul, our spirit? What nourishes them? Is there a "spiritual-animic junk food" we should be aware of? How can we carry all this in our daily life, in our professional life, in some action that can change our (and then other's) reality?
Sabrina Menestrina & Anet Spengler Neff (Deutsch/Italiano) (s)
12 Gedankenmosaike zum Tagungsthema / Thought mosaics on the conference theme
Simone Helmle & Reto Ingold (Deutsch/English) (i)
What thoughts does the conference evoke? The workshop is a stimulus solely through the thoughts of the workshop participants - questions, fragments, words. Listening in, listening to each other, being able to express what is formed inwardly during the conference. In this way we would like to give space to trace the conference lectures in their own language and in front of their own background. Reading the calendar of the soul, small group discussions, silence and mosaics of thoughts in the plenum into an open space in order to connect the conference contributions with one's own experiences and to allow new things to emerge from them. The workshop is led and entrusts itself completely to the power of the participants.
13 Das Geistige in der Sozialgestalt – miteinander arbeiten und wirtschaften / The spiritual in a social form – working and farming together
Matthias Zaiser (Deutsch/English) (s)
It can be felt and experienced when people commit themselves to a cause together, work together or do business together. What lives spiritually in such a community and how can I perceive and nurture this impulse? How can we recognize the meaning in it and strengthen our life practice? - so that, detached from an anonymous market, sustainable and responsible systems of meaning and development communities are formed?
These are questions of the workshop. After a short introductory impulse, these questions will be researched in small groups and discussed in the plenary session.
14 Soziale Gerechtigkeit und spirituelle Landwirtschaft /
Social justice and spiritual agriculture
Thea Maria Carlson & Steffen Schneider & Alex Tuchman (Deutsch/English) (i)
Since 1924 biodynamic agriculture has inspired farmers to work in harmony with nature and the spiritual world to grow healthy soil and nutritious food. Often these healing farming practices have existed alongside injustice and pain in the human realm, from racism to labor exploitation. In the age of the consciousness soul, there is a global awakening towards the health of our social fabric and the historical trauma and pain that lives in landscapes and communities. How do we work with these realities where we farm? Through personal narrative and group exercises, we will explore how to responsibly address questions and challenges that arise through the lens of the spiritual in agriculture.
15 Vertiefen: Übungen für partizipative Zertifizierung (Hofgespräche) / Diving in: Exercises in participatory certification (farm talks)
Schirin Oeding & Petra Derkzen & Thomas Schmid (Deutsch/English) (i)
In participatory certification schemes, a group of colleagues, not somewhere behind a desk, makes evaluations and decisions on the farm. Participatory certification offers a great possibility for farms and farmers to really be seen and to give insights into why and how they farm, rather than ticking boxes. This type of certification also presents some unique challenges: How can we make sure that the participatory process stays healthy and fair, so that farmers are not judged arbitrarily? How can we ensure that a high standard of production is maintained? What do we need to learn? We offer three days of exercises in small groups to create an inner picture of how the dilemma feels, inviting participants to dive into the challenges of participatory certification with real-life examples. We will also present a sampling of projects currently working with participatory certification in different countries.
16 Wirksensorik – die Wirkung hinter dem Geschmack erleben / Empathic food testing – experiencing the impact behind the taste
Uwe Geier & Eileen Scheller (Deutsch/English) (i)
17 Kräuteranbau zwischen Schönheit und Nützlichkeit / Herb-growing between beauty and utility
Ola Aukrust & Christina Spieß (Deutsch/English) (i)
In this interactive workshop, reference will be made to the theme of the conference. The relationship between humans and plants is to play an important role in dealing with the aspects "Herb-growing between beauty and utility". Ola Aukrust will give an insight into the cultivation of herbs on his farm in Norway, while Christina Spieß will deal with the subject from an ethnological perspective. Together, the participants in small groups will devote themselves to the topics of the workshop and learn from and with each other in a fruitful exchange.

20 Spirituelles Kompostieren – Inneres Kompostieren / Spiritual composting – Inner composting
Benno Otter & Hans Supenkämper (Deutsch/English) (i)
How do I find my "Inner Compost Material"? On the basis of the seven life processes, the transformation of one's own "inner waste", weak points and one-sidedness is to be experienced and recognized, so that the formation of "social humus" can occur in inner processes of transformation and individualization.

25 Die Beziehung von Stoff und Geist
Christine Rüter & Ute Kirchgaesser (Deutsch) (i)

Making of sound-landscapes, with voice and body percussion All of us carry a musician in us, sometimes it stays more inside and sometimes it appears outside. On the other hand we all have two great instruments: our voice and our body used as a percussive medium. In our workshop we will make that inner musician become visible or rather audible by performing those two wonderful instruments. We will create sound landscapes together. The language we will mainly use in our workshop will be the musical language, so do not worry if you do not speak Spanish nor English, everybody is welcome. Those who play other instruments are warmly invited to bring them along.

“A Way” is a lecture of how one can deepen their understanding and re-connect with the natural world through the practice of Biodynamic Agriculture, and how the further practice of Social Threefolding with the “community of people on the farm’, especially at a Camphill, extends through the Farm Organism, creating a radiant Farm Individuality. This “lighting of a candle” beacons refuge for the world, and provides “A Way” for humanity to re-connect and find redemption.

Bernard Phillips (6.

Stier – quellende, schwellende Prozesse
Zwilling – ausdehnende Prozesse
Jungfrau – reifende Prozesse
Skorpion – reagierende Prozesse

How do you transform a farm in a biodynamic living organism?
How does the spirit of agricultural individuality fall with the action of man?
Is it possible to design and build an agricultural organism or a biodynamic garden that is spiritual food for the human being? This is possible if we plan to design knowing the spiritual of man and of nature. Through the biodynamic design a harmony is created between the physical body of the farm, its etheric body, its astral body and social activity. You can create the environments, the gardens, the landscapes, the living agricultural organisms on a human scale.
With translation into English.

Unser Pilotprojekt für assoziatives Wirtschaften fragt danach: was brauchst Du, Bauer / was brauchst Du, Seemann?
Teikei´s spiritual approach is very pragmatic: What can a cup of coffee be worth to us? What can the soil and the sea be worth to us? Our pilot project for associative economy asks: what do you need, farmer and sailor? This is not only a question of survival, it is all above a spiritual question. We take too much time that we no longer have, but need.

Mythology and Agriculture: Beginning from Goddess Demeter
Workshop, Nikolaos-Theodosios Koutsodimos (English)
Friday
Holzhaus • Atelier
During this workshop, we will approach the cosmological background of the ancient greek " Ηymn to Demeter". Τhe abduction of Demeter's daughter Persephone to the underworld by Plouton provokes crisis to both worlds, the divine one and the human one, but also between them. The crisis emerged as Demeter griefs for her child and seeks for revenge by preventing the earth from giving sprouts from the seeds, as a result, first humans face famine and second gods would be bereft of offering, sacrifice, and worship. The world of gods is threatened by dishonest and the world of humans by starvation. Finally, the resolution comes as the daughter is allowed to visit her mother for eight months of the year and the rest returning to her husband in the underworld. During these eight months, humans can work the land with the assurance of Demeter's favor, who offers them the art of agriculture in order to flourish and live their temporal lives.
By analyzing in an interactive way the different perspectives of the myth, we will give some evidence on how Demeter's demands constitute an intervention to the world of humans. The consequence of the intervention is the transformation of agriculture from a natural process to a human activity surrounded by divine guarantees and conducted under the roof of Demeter's and Persephone's power. The cosmic refractions are drawn into coherence by the focus on Demeter's power over the food supply. We will discuss how myth promotes a cosmological framework for agriculture to act as interlinkage between the divine/spiritual world and the human/empirical one, but also how agriculture as an intermediary practice transforms the resources of the underworld into life for the world above the ground.
Experiences of the participants on similar myths of their cultures will be discussed in order common grounds on the mythological framework of agriculture to be found and be further analyzed.

Short presentation and most important information of the new launched Peer Review Quality System for International Biodynamic Advisors: In recent years the Section for Agriculture, together with Demeter International and many international advisors, has been working on a quality system for biodynamic advisory services, based on the peer review process. In this process the advisors are examined and evaluated by colleagues from the quality system. This Peer Review Quality System aims to create a common basis for qualitative advisory work in Biodynamics. Together we wish to form a network of national and international advisers who aim to strengthen and further develop the biodynamic movement.
